Olympic diving showcases super-tight trunks with revolutionary heritage

Olympic diving showcases super-tight trunks with revolutionary heritage | Sport | The Guardian
It may be hard to believe, but the Speedo is something of a revolutionary item of swimwear. Often the source of scorn, those form-fitting pants are the progeny of a company which reddened the cheeks of beach inspectors in the s by developing a "controversial two-piece" that's a bikini to the less faint of heart and championed a racer-back costume to liberate women from hard-to-love bloomers. In the early 20th century, when swimwear was designed to offer maximum coverage rather than comfort and flexibility, an Australian company developed a line of swimwear under the tagline "Speed on your Speedos". Thus, a legend was born.

Spinoff: Little Boys in Speedos?
So, that post about little girls in bikinis got me thinking. Do you think there is anything wrong with little boys wearing speedos? I grew up in the 's - back then me and every one of my friends only worse speedos to swim in. Sometime in the 's I think that started to change as 'baggies' became more popular - I think as a result of surf culture bleeding into the fashion mainstream. Now I don't see many boys wearing speedos at all, but some of the swim shorts they have on look so long and baggy, they actually seem restrictive.

But those visiting Harlow Pool in Essex have no choice after knee-length shorts were banned - for health and safety reasons. Details of the extraordinary edict emerged after three boys were sent home for wearing 'inappropriate' baggy shorts. Marc Smith, 13, his brother Ryan, 12, and their cousin Eliot Lee, also 12, were stunned when a lifeguard at the council-run pool told them the loose material could dangerously impede their swimming. The brothers' mother yesterday accused bosses of being "a few gallons short of a full pool" - particularly as they admitted there has never been an accident at the pool involving shorts.
